Your family members and others are eager to learn more about you. Without setting the stage for continued embarrassment, you can choose the lessons you've learned through the years and pass on your wisdom to your readers. Take us there. Even if your only brush with fame was assisting with surgery for the governor, your experiences are fascinating to those lucky enough to hear your version of what happened. Your biggest challenge is cutting your content to perhaps a dozen major events that lead to the conclusion of your book. Then place your reader on the scene, whether it's the grueling third year of medical school or the delivery of a set of premie triplets. Share the sights, sounds, and even the smells of what's going on. Your options. You also have the option of simply recording the facts: dates, places, events. Set up a family tree. Include photos of family members as far back as you have them. You'll end up with a record or a scrapbook, not a gripping book, but it will be kept as a memento of the past by your children and their descendants. A platform. You may consider your memoirs as a secret document shared only with your spouse and others close to you. Even then, the stories and events you describe in this volume can serve as a launching platform for speeches and stories you share with others. Not for old people only. You don't have to wait until you are 85 or more to write your memoirs. If you've just returned from a year as a "doctor without borders" or have been able to do surgery for the first time since you were injured in an airplane crash two years ago, tell your story now, while it's fresh in your mind.
