Words are the essence of your book

Whether your book is published online or printed on 800 sheets of paper, whether it's a comedy or a lab manual, words convey the information and ideas of your book.

Every now and then we get a call from someone who says, "I think my book is pretty good, but I'm not sure about the words in it." This is usually from a person who wants a diligent job of editing applied to the book. My first question is, "Do you think you need someone to rewrite the book from scratch? Or are you just looking for a good edit?"

How do you choose a competent writer for your editorial needs? Start by being honest about what you want the writer to do. The second step is to be sure the writer you choose has the experience and qualifications you need. The third, and most important step, is to give yourself a way out if the writing ends up being a big disappointment. The book is yours, and youhave every right to expect editing, rewriting, or writing to be at the highest level.

On the other hand, don't hold back your evaluation until the writer has put in many hours of work and then expect to pay nothing for the writer's efforts. The rule of thumb is to pay for services provided. Get examples of work done early in the project and if you're going to call it off for the project, do it then.

This doesn't happen often. People who want to write know their work is on display and won't ask for the privilege of writing for you unless they're confident you'll be pleased with the results. Our specialty at Griffith Publishing is to taking complex medical concepts and explaining them in interesting and clear ways. This works especially well in newsletters and patient information materials.

IIf this is the essence of your current publishing project, be sure to provide your writer with plenty of details, illustrations, examples and "human touch" observances to give the words the bounce and energy they need.

Words, words, words. Make sure you put the investment required to make your words carry full value to your readers.

Physician Publishing represents a line of editorial and design work offered by Griffith Publishing, providing book publishing services since 1988.
